Toronto, Ontario recent comments:

  • Home Outfitters, KennedyParkGuy (guest) wrote 15 years ago:
This is where my mom bought me a Vancouver 2010 hat and gloves as a Christmas present. (Who'd go to Home Outfitters to buy those?) I even got to wear them outside as the Olympic torch passed through Ingersoll, Ontario (where her parents live)!
  • Warden Power Centre **demolished**, KennedyParkGuy (guest) wrote 15 years ago:
Don't forget the old 8-screen movie theatre (which closed along with several other Cineplex Odeon locations in 2001)! I remember Hy & Zel's in their later years to charge $1 for a shopping cart rather than the usual 25¢.
  • Warden Station (TTC), KennedyParkGuy (guest) wrote 15 years ago:
The reason why the subway and bus terminals are separated here (as well as at Islington and Victoria Park, although the latter is currently being renovated) is because when they opened in 1968, the subway was in Zone 1 while all of the bus routes were in Zone 2. The extra space was necessary for customers to pay their extra fare to cross the zone boundary.
  • The Beach Housing Complex, KennedyParkGuy (guest) wrote 15 years ago:
Formerly Greenwood Race Track, and Woodbine Race Track before that until Woodbine moved to its current location near Highway 27 and Rexdale Boulevard. Directions on the TTC for both became very confusing when the Bloor-Danforth subway (which originally terminated at Woodbine) opened...
  • former No Frills, KennedyParkGuy (guest) wrote 15 years ago:
Interesting how the 506 Carlton streetcar goes south on Parliament, passes a No Frills, turns east on Gerrard, turns north on Coxwell, then passes a similar No Frills here (or is it just me?)
  • Sobeys, KennedyParkGuy (guest) wrote 15 years ago:
Formerly IGA, then Food City before that.
  • Loblaws Supermarket, KennedyParkGuy (guest) wrote 15 years ago:
The closest one to Scarborough (every last Loblaws in the former city has either closed or converted to No Frills, with Cedarbrae Market being the final victim when Loblaw Superstore opened in Scarborough Town Centre in 2008).
  • Lowes, KennedyParkGuy (guest) wrote 15 years ago:
    Formerly Eaton's
  • Cineplex Silver City -- Fairview, KennedyParkGuy (guest) wrote 15 years ago:
I find it interesting that Cineplex closed this theatre down in 2001, only to reopen it seven years later (it didn't reopen until December 2008 and is now under the SilverCity banner).
  • Petro Canada, KennedyParkGuy (guest) wrote 15 years ago:
I remember my dad buying me a Winnie the Pooh book here when I was two years old.
  • Walmart Super Centre, KennedyParkGuy (guest) wrote 15 years ago:
When the Wal-Mart Supercentre at Pharmacy and Eglinton opened in March 2007, I was wondering why it was the "West Scarborough" location... now I know!
  • Popeye Chicken with Drive thru, KennedyParkGuy (guest) wrote 15 years ago:
This was a Burger King from around 1999-2002, then this closed and the one at Cedarbrae Mall opened. It reopened as a Popeyes circa 2004.
  • Canada Murugan temple, KennedyParkGuy (guest) wrote 15 years ago:
    Formerly a bingo hall
  • Esso Station, KennedyParkGuy (guest) wrote 15 years ago:
Complete with Tim Hortons! (Wow, my neighbourhood is really oversaturated with those... I remember when Kennedy/Eglinton was the only one, then this opened, then Midland/Eglinton, then Kennedy Park Plaza... what's next, Greystone Walk?)
  • Shopper's Drugmart, McDonalds, some daycare, KennedyParkGuy (guest) wrote 15 years ago:
It's a "McDonald's Express." The nearest non-Express McDonald's is one and a half kilometres west at McCowan Road.
  • Future Shop, KennedyParkGuy (guest) wrote 15 years ago:
There used to be a Canadian Tire here until the late 90s (the gas station remains); the Canadian Tire at Cedarbrae Mall opened not long after this one closed, IIRC.
  • Hudson's Bay, KennedyParkGuy (guest) wrote 15 years ago:
Opened in 1962. For many, many years, it was the home of a nonfunctioning escalator from the rooftop parking lot.
  • Soon Lee Supermarket, Tim Hortons, KennedyParkGuy (guest) wrote 15 years ago:
There was a Beer Store where Soon Lee Supermarket was until about 1995 or 1996. According to MapArt, it's still there (at least as of their 2008 edition).
  • Community Garden, KennedyParkGuy (guest) wrote 15 years ago:
Until about 2001, this used to be a HUGE outdoor McDonald's Playplace. Around that time, they renovated the whole restaurant and added a smaller indoor Playplace.
  • KFC, KennedyParkGuy (guest) wrote 15 years ago:
One of my favourite KFC locations, and one of the few that actually has extra crispy chicken when you ask for it most of the time.
